The hard choices -- what we most fear doing, asking, saying -- are very often exactly what we need to do. How can we overcome self-paralysis and take action? Tim Ferriss encourages us to fully envision and write down our fears in detail, in a simple but powerful exercise he calls "fear-setting." Learn more about how this practice can help you thrive in high-stress environments and separate what you can control from what you cannot.

My take home: If I avoid this action, what will it cost me?!
I am going to ask myself this every time I try to procrastinate. And just the thought of the things my procrastination has delayed so far is making me to freak out. Why have I been procrastinating all along?! 😳😳😳
I've never heard about the blue light thing to help from going to deep into depression. I've spoken to a few doctors including specialists and never have they mentioned it. I KNOW Tim knows what he's talking about and I look forward to trying that. Anti depressants never have effected me, bad or good. Hope this doesn't come across wrong (being a heterosexual male) but I love Tim Ferris. Very happy to have come upon this video.
Good riddance to the girl that didn't stand by your side while you were building your first business. Sure she regrets that now and my guess is you have found she wasn't right for you. Great talk. Makes me wanna look for your latest book that's out.
Easy choices, hard life, hard choices, easy life. I love that and have been on the fence about doing some world travel, among some other things when I return. I will ALWAYS remember this quote. Thank you Tim. So glad to see you still out there. Wish you would put on a workshop or something. Would definitely go and would be awesome to finally meet you.
I've really liked this guy for a long time, have read at least one of his books. Did not know he has bipolar disorder and has thought of suicide. Sometimes I've felt like the only one. Gives me hope knowing he has been able to work through it. I think of suicide about once every 10 days. I'm here now only because I can't do that to my family. My dad did it to me, and it was the worst. I'm doing my best, but this helps some. I hope with more reflection it helps even more.
Hi Jane, I've travelled solo for four years and I can totally relate to your fears. But guess what? Nothing of that came true. Start with doing small solo trips, choose countries that are very safe for women, such as Japan, Northern Europe, Bulgaria, South Korea, etc. Research anything that you feel unsure about, connect with women who have been there. The media love to paint the world as dangerous and while it IS more difficult and dangerous as a women to travel, fear, stereotypes and "scary men" shouldn't stop you from chasing your dreams. The more you travel solo the more you realise how in control you are, how fear has held you back and how your instincts are really powerful.
“Where in my life right now might defining my fears be more important than defining my goals?”
The premise is invalid in that a fear can not be the same as a goal. If my goals are the same as my fears (singular fear, or objective of my awe), then this question is moot.
easy choices hard life. hard choices easy life...hard choices that we most fear doing, often is the things we most need to do. the biggest challenges are not solved comfortable conversations... where will defining fears be more important than defining goals... we suffer more often in imagination than in reality.
Buddhism had been the best practice I've done. Similar concepts in Stoicism, but the point is that everyone needs and operating system and a way to update their internal "software". That's the only way you stop being blown around by the winds of change and start learning to ride the waves and set your own course.
So many people missed the part where he says that he was planning the trip to London in order to remove himself from his business, in order to see if the current problems in the company were because of his influence or because the business was not sustainable anymore, i.e. if the company needed to be managed in different manner/by different person/etc. or shut down altogether. The examples the speaker provided were related to taking time off in general rather than the specifics of his business at the time, because these resonate with broader public I believe.
Those who say this problem has no ground in reality, simply don't realize how many of the people they meet on daily basis are self employed or run small private business and are plagued by the same dilemmas all the time.

WOW, what a great video! My gf and I just watched this together. We found it VALUABLE by many perspectives. Namaste.
Thank you Mr. Ferri$ for everything you contribute back to The Process ( & TED). Mr. Ferri$ you have been a primary guide for millions of entrepreneur's, including me for the past seven years. In fact, I have the Go With The Flow decision matrix photocopied and pasted on the bottom right hand side of my laptop keyboard. I am obtaining huge mental gains every day from this one tool. I also keep a jar of awesome, it's awesome. Again, huge mental gain$ from this tool.
Anyone else use a Jar of Awesome?
Mr. Ferri$ mentions Stoicism, in particular Seneca. This is great because I did a book review on all the letters that Seneca wrote. These letters are remarkable. Investing the time to reading Letters of a Stoic is paying off mentally. I am certain of this. This is so cool because this video gives me courage to continue my entrepreneurial journey since Stoicism works for other wisdom seekers who are further along in their journey. Good things come in threes, experience becomes wisdom, which gets passed down to children, which gets passed down to grandchildren. Triangulate thy perspective to increase odds chance of suce$$.

Love it. Reminds of the Avatar Course tool Walk for Atonement, in particular the Walk on Worry. Very effective especially when trying make big changes.
What I love about Tim is his complete LACK of ego. We often think business mogels/athletes/actors are these bulletproof individuals that have no problems, but they are struggling with things just like us. That's encouraging to me.
Stoicism, yes, I agree. We got too many drama-queens (and -kings?) in this world already. Keep your cool. Don't let them wreck your nerves. And don't let life get you down. There are only few things in life that don't look better after a nice hot bath and/or a nice cup of tea. There are real tragics happening sometimes, but most people have to learn the difference!
self-paralysis is something that's kept me from producing my own art/drumming videos for years. I'm on a path to recovery, and just posted a first video in a series of talks about fear, and how we deal with it as artists/YouTubers... https://youtu.be/W1wyXSIZ3y0
An Stoic attitude will do it for us because it will not allow our limbic system and our prefrontal cortex to atrophy, that is what happens when we have a life almost devoid of difficulties and with so much wealth and prosperity. That's why Western civilization is being overrun by all these neo-Marxist/post-modernist/Hedonist/Narcissist snowflakes right now: excess wealth brought in by the free-market we used to have and by Christian morality...
Atrophy on those parts cause a lack of willpower and self-constraint, and a lower time preference ("more immediatism"). In short, those are what make us humans, and with them damaged we begin to revert back to mindless animals...
God, I really love your humble way of seeing life. And I love stoa as well, by the way. I think people nowadays try to control their actions more than their emotions, so that they set change in their lives from outside. But reflecting fear is so going inside and changing authentically, that change can really happen more easily and without an inner resistance because it comes from there. Thank you so much for this concept! Besides I want to name the artist Marina Abramovic in this context because she is led in life by her fears. She does always the things that she fears the most. A big inspiration for me.
Absolutely beautiful talk. It asks to dynamically shift our perspective towards one where we expand upon the worst that could possibly happen and then construct a solution that shows a path towards what could lead to our success.
Whoa, I was just about to read the book I just started reading ' On the Shortness of Life ' by Seneca but first I needed to make breakfast and decided to listen to a Ted talk while cooking eggs. What a coincidence it just so happened to be on Stoicism.
I never thought of that...fear settings...so awesome. Just as he showed, fear created scenarios that never happened and took the trip and made his life better, like always the imagination of the what if's cause anxiety. I just ignore fear and that doesn't attach the scenarios in real life, but this also works as well, makes a great mental workout and everything according to plans and foreseen...so Palpatine hahaha.
Tim Ferris is wonderful and his concept has worked charm in my life. I have written a book for understanding this concept in an easiest way possible "Fear setting and feelicity" and credited Timothy ferris for the change he brought in my life too. The book is available in amazon. Do check it out https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=fear+setting+and+felicity
Tim's an ex raver! Who'd have thunk it? The eyes and the choice of hat are the basis for my theory.
On a more serious note, great video, and admiration for being bold enough to be open about the suicide topic, and in so doing, fighting the stigma. In an insane world sane people make such choices with some level of logic. Of course sticking around to try and fix the problems is a better option but in a world full of disconnection and isolation, it's the tough option.
